Take Beautiful Portraits with your Camera Phone

InfoTrends estimated that 1.2 trillion digital photos were taken in 2017, this number is set to increase each year as the cameras on smart phones improve and people share more and more of their lives online. When you take a photo, you want to make sure you are taking good quality pictures that capture the subject.

How to take good portraits with your phone

We have put together some practical tips on how to take good portraits with your camera phone.

Step1: Is your camera clean?

Sounds obvious, right? When was the last time you cleaned the camera on your phone? If there is smudge or dirt on the lens it will affect the quality of the picture, so give it wipe just to be sure.

Step 2: Check the photographic frame

This is the portion of the scene that you want to appear in the photo. Make sure that the model is in the photo completely and you are not cutting off parts of his face or body. Check the background to make sure that everything you are capturing in the image is of relevance.

Step 3: Lighting is important

It doesn’t matter what phone you have or how good the camera is, if you don’t work the light you are never going to get a good picture. When you are taking portraits, it is best to look for soft lighting that doesn’t add shadows to the face. Avoid the flash as much as you can, it is a hard-white light that goes to the face and will erase detail and natural colors.

Step 4: Avoid the zoom

When you use the zoom on our camera phone to take a portrait you are just expanding the image inside your phone. Basically, you are just losing quality of the photo. Instead of zooming in, move closer to your model. Get creative to get the shot you want, stand on a chair or lie down until you feel you are capturing the right angle for the portrait.

Step 5: Focus

When you have checked all these steps, it is time to focus. Always use manual focus, this way you can decide where you want to focus to go. It is always a good idea to focus on the model’s eyes when taking a portrait.

Most of the new phones today come with a professional mode that will allow you to control the light and color. If your phone doesn’t come with these options, get creative with the light, angles and colors. If you really aren’t getting the look you want, you can edit the photo in one of the many photography editing apps.

A good photo doesn’t depend on the quality of your camera but rather your attention to detail and your use of light, spaces and angle. Don’t be scared to try something new, get your friends and family together and try out some of these tips. The most important thing is to be creative and have fun with your portraits.
